ZZZZzzzzz...
Feb. 21st, 2002 08:19 pmI don't think I've been this physically exhausted in a long time. That's kind of pathetic; I just did half and hour of aerobics yesterday and an hour today, but my arms are just barely on this side of being officially dead. I continued working on my sewing project and cutting in a straight line was tough on my poor arms. I shudder to think of what they'll feel like tomorrow. And I'm going bowling, of all things! *groans*
Walking to City Hall (which I will *never* refer to as the City of Gatineau, so be quiet!) this afternoon, I took my usual shortcut, through the little stretch of trees to the street behind the arena. Lo and behold, they've bordered the path with a chain link fence! Not so that people won't be able to go through, but so that people on bicycles will need to seriously check their speed and do some fancy maneuvering to get through.
This sucks, because ever since I was eight years old and went to the library once a week in the summer, I've always loved riding back home from the Principale/Eardley intersection. Get enough speed going down the arena parking-lot entrance, which is a fairly steep hill, by Outaouais standards, and you can do the whole length of the parking lot without pedaling. Once past the arena, you just need to pedal a bit before getting to the little stretch in the trees which is always muddy after the rain. Coming out of the trees, you have no choice but to slow down, even if you're not used to the amount of traffic going by, because there's a slight rise. I imagine that's why they put the fence, to slow people down, but I can't help but be annoyed at the delays this will cause.
I feel suitably old geezer-like, complaining about them people-proofing the little dangers in the neighbourhood. It's like when they put up the fence around the park down the street so that when you slide down the slopes in winter, you crash into metal instead of the snowbank and there's no chance of getting really good momentum and making it to the road.
I think I had some pseudo-philosophical point to make with this, but my brain's been on idle most of the day. Scavenging for food, reading, cutting cloth and watching anime were all I could manage after the aerobics, and I think the women's figure skating is starting up soon, so I'll leave it at that.
