One week later... Oops!
Aug. 4th, 2003 05:48 pmThis is the first internet cafe we've come across, and this computer only has Spanish keyboard, so bear with me.
There's been this recurring theme during the U.S. leg of our journey, and I like to call it Rain While We Camp. Two nights it didn't rain and wouldn't you know that those were 2 of the 4 nights we were in motels? Funny, that.
We didn't do much except drive, save for 2 interesting stops. The first was in Charleston, VA, a beautiful old town. I treated my family to a fancy dinner, where my mother came face to face with the biggest scallop she'd ever seen. She won. We also walked around town, admiring the lovely, *enormous* houses, legacy of the town's rich heritage.
The second stop of interest was New Orleans, where we walked around the Garden District (again, bloody *HUGE* houses left and right) and took a guided tour that was supposed to teach us all about voodoo and local history. It was off to an admirable start, when a sudden violent thunderstorm slowed down the proceedings. It was nice how it happened when we were in an ancient cemetary, though, very appropriate.
Now that I'm in Mexico, let me tell you something about trying to cross the border with a vehicle: there are much easier ways to get here, like by plane. We had to fill out forms, have things stamped, pay, have more things stamped, get in line, wait in line, be told to go outside, find another customs official to stick something on our windshield and then, finally, we could enter the country. Thank god I speak Spanish, there's hardly any English here at all, so I could translate for my father.
My left ear has been plugged up for about a week and I'm getting sick of it. I can hear okay at a distance, but up close I have to turn my head. Bloh.
Have I mentioned the heat? No? Well, it's atrocious. Not as bad here as it was in the Deep South because it's dry, here, but still... crushing.
Hopefully I'll be able to post regularly from now on, at least for the time we'll be in Mexico. For now, until next time!
