If anyone ever wondered what happened in the second half of Fushigi Yuugi, a random Ebay listing will answer all your questions:

The later episodes are darker in tone, marked by threats of rape, attempted rape, and the deaths of several secondary characters (some of whom die).

Good thing they clarified that dying bit, it totally went over my head the first time. XD
