Foiled again!
Sep. 1st, 2006 12:54 pmThis is rather cruel: just last night, I found out where the fabric district, or possibly the TWO fabric districts, in Tokyo is/are located, and it's been raining since I got up. Raining hard, too! And it was so nice and sunny yesterday... Bloh.
I've been thinking incessantly about the costumes I want to make, but I have to keep telling myself that once I get set up, the first thing to do is finish the Regency corset and the second thing to do is make something to wear with it! And that will do very well for Halloween. Also, it'll take less fabric than the other things I plan to make. I'm wondering if I could somehow work the trim I bought at Costume College into my idea, but the one with the grapes seems too dark (black, green and apricot/orange). The flowered one has no black, so that might work, but it seems a shame to not use them on the same project, as they match quite nicely. At any rate, the green velvet ribbon will be at the waist, no matter what else I decide to use. Besides, with the dizzying array of everything available in Tokyo, I'm sure I'll find more than enough of everything to satisfy my vision.
After that, well... ever since I can remember, I've always wanted a henin. When I was a kid, my mother made me several, usually out of pink cardboard, decorated with glued-on sequins and leftover bits of tulle, so I could be a princess. I still want one. Or even a similar funny medieval hat, haven't yet decided; I have the high, broad forehead to pull most of those styles off -- at least, I think I look quite good in a towel turban, which is arguably similar in shape. :) And I'll need a dress to go with it. Obviously. I'm thinking burgundy silk over black velvet, trimmed with (fake) silver fur. Because at Yuzawaya (a.k.a The Best Store Ever, or TBSE), they sell fake fur trim by the metre! So maybe to all you folks who actually live in places that are large enough to have a fabric district this is nothing new, but the Ottawa area has none of that, so it's quite a revelation to me.
And after that, perhaps 17th century, green and gold with blue accents. Actually, I asked G if he thought I should go with red and gold or green and gold or red and silver or green and silver as the main colours, but he seemed to think that red with either silver or gold screamed Christmas and he thought green and silver sounded weird. I know it's not the usual combination, but I've always liked it. However, that same day I'd just bought a used obi with an emerald green (just about my favourite colour in the world) background and a leaf design in gold and turquoise, which would make lovely trim once picked apart (much too stiff now, double layer of brocade), so for now, green and gold it is.
