Niagara Falls was even better than I remembered it! The first time I was there, in secondary 2, I was 12 years old and blown away first by the falls, then by the heady feeling engendered by the freedom to spend the evening walking around Clifton Hill with my friends. The second time was in 1997 with my family; I was almost 16 (so mature!) and was bowled over by how tacky and touristy the city itself was. This time, I was a ripe old 26 years old and with my homegirls. We indulged in a weekend of junk food, haunted houses and mini-golf and it was awesome! The city's cleaned up quite a bit since the last time I was there, but the charming kitsch only has a glossier finish.

If you like haunted houses, may I suggest Fear Factory on Victoria Avenue. There are live actors inside and if you're at the back of the group, as I was, you'll not only get your ankles grabbed, you'll get your hair stroked! You can also buy a picture of yourself(selves) at the end and is it ever worth it! Ours turned out so hilarious that we couldn't stop whipping it out every half-hour or so afterwards to laugh about it all over again.

We also went to Niagara-on-the-Lake, which is every bit as charming as you'd expect, in spite of all the tourists. The only bad thing about it was that the strap on my sandal broke, so we only made it to one winery before I gave up and decided to hobble no further.

On the way back, we stopped at Pacific Mall to have lunch and shop a bit. And ever though I had absolutely no intention of eating any Japanese food during my fortnight in Canada, A-L and M-P wanted to order a sushi platter along with our meals. I couldn't let them face all that sushi alone, now, could I? And then there were stores full of sparkly earrings and necklaces and shoes and bags and what kind of friend would I be if I refused a birthday present of my choice of accessories?

I didn't want to be one of those people who come back from Japan and can't say anything good about eating out in Canada, but... I've gotten used to reasonable portions, damn it! Not the mountainous serving of pad thai I got yesterday! I brought the rest of it home and it was enough for lunch for both my father and me.
