Stewwwwww...
Jan. 22nd, 2008 08:21 pmThinking back on what I said about Perdido Street Station, and more specifically Derkhan Blueday, I want to clarify why I feel it's important to know her background. With a character like Isaac, whose life and actions are readily understood based on his temperament, personal history (childhood, etc.) isn't all that important. With an artists and activists, like Lin and Derkhan, who haven't followed a typical path, there should be some sort of catalyst, some reason for them to have chosen the harder way they did. We get Lin's history, but never Derkhan's, and it seems to me that because what Derkhan does is more subversive -- or at least poses greater immediate risk to herself -- than Lin's art, it would help to know about her past.
In lesser news, I'm now all about the stew. Last week's incarnation featured potatoes, Japanese yellow sweet potatoes, daikon, carrots, onion, naganegi (like a cross between green onions and leeks -- I like!), and beef. This week's incarnation has no daikon or naganegi, but it has Japanese turnips, which are small and white and sweet, and cabbage. The only trouble is it takes a while to cook, so I started it last night and am currently waiting for the meat to cook through to chewy instead of tough.
The other day, I discovered what appears to be a 24-hour supermarket near my place! It's in the basement of a shopping centre I like to frequent (cute clothes! ACCESSORIES!!!), but it's not connected to the rest of the building, so I'd never been down there. Turns out they have quite a nice counter with prepared food, and reasonably-priced sushi. Their veggies are a little more expensive than my corner grocery store, though the selection is much better. And they had the new grapefruit Fanta for 99y!
Prince of Tennis has been sucking me in... would it be bad to admit that I started watching it mainly because I wanted to read the fanfiction? Golden Pair, baby! :D~ Aside from that, whenever I hear Kabaji's name I think, "Cabbage!" and wonder what the author was smoking, even though I know that cabbage is "kyabetsu" in Japanese.
I've also been on a major Leonard Cohen kick, listening to nothing else since last week.
ETA: I forgot to mention that if anyone wants to see pictures of pretty, pretty kimono, or Japanese historical costumes, head over to www.travelpod.com/members/gadelle. I think this updating once a week thing, crazy idea that it is, may just work!
ETA2: I also forgot to mention that apart from the yummy-looking vegetables, my main motivation in making stew was using up the can of beer my father left behind in my fridge. See? Waste not, want not!
