A review that's been long in coming...

Before I say anything about the series, I must point out, yet again, that I really loved the manga.  Which came first, anyway, and besides that, I'll always be a print girl rather than a film girl.  While I don't know much about the circumstances surrounding the creating of the manga, I do know (and it's obvious when you read it) that the author changed direction several times.  What started out as a story about Yuusuke performing a good deed every chapter in order to regain his life became a story about Yuusuke leading a team charged with protecting the human world from demons, which morphed into a
tournament complete with overblown attacks and fights lasting entire volumes, before going back to the "protecting the human world motif" in which demon ancestry was explored, and then -- hey look!  Another tournament!  Then it's back to solving minor demon-related crime, then a little glimpse into the lives of the main characters (ever wondered who Yuusuke's father was?), and then another little crime-fighting escapade before a sweet, simple ending.  Along with the story, the art underwent a major shift; the initial thick lines, more rounded features and compact bodies evolved into a sketchier style, with longer limbs and lighter strokes.

The anime sticks quite closely to the story (even the art follows, to a certain extent) until the events of the last two manga volumes.  By then, either the author was either tiring of the series, or his editors told him to wrap things up quickly.  Whichever it is, the last few chapters pack quite a lot into a comparatively small number of pages, especially when you consider that the first tournament takes four volumes, whereas the second tournament is told in under one volume, even though the stakes are much higher.  The animators must have felt this was unfair to the audience, so they went ahead and animated several fights, as well as extensive play-by-plays of Yuusuke discovering all his new powers.  All in all, I still prefer the manga's final poignant scenes, but the anime was certainly a faithful adaptation.

And now, what you've all been waiting for: the horribly broken English-from-Chinese-from-Japanese translation!

You are such people also indeed

Use brain to fight is the cleverest

It's because of smart control under our smart controller

He looks so peace

I am not your happy nut : I completely forgot the context of this one, but I do know that I didn't understand the dialogue, so I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

You laugh on me again

Kurabara is still catching fakery right

Regret my power can come anytime

Urameshi finally discover "mix ball" : Maybe I shouldn't poke fun at this one, because "mix ball" is how they rendered the concept of a combination of reiki and youki to form an attack. How would you have translated it?

It's empty in the brain.  Feels so good! : An interesting way to say that you're completely focused on the fight at hand.

You must have to win

Keep continue to the last all alongs

The strength man in devil world

You gonna curry me to die : Yummy! :D
