Watching an entertaining tv series is fun, but it's even better when you can read a snarky review about it afterwards: Television Without Pity, how I love thee.

So I finished watching season 3 of The L Word and felt the need to say a few :

First of all, and you're free to mock the fact that this stuck with me, when Lara's doing her mud-bath thing in Paris, my first reaction to what the other woman was saying (in French) was "Why the hell is an American speaking French -- well-pronounced but obviously North American Anglo-accented French -- to another American?" Or maybe Lara's French is just so good she fooled the other woman? Since the only thing she replied was "Non," the world may never know.

Helena is now BFF with Dana? Hello? That, along with several other things, made me wonder just how much of season 2 I'd missed. One or two episodes, for sure, but I could have sworn I'd seen the finale. Turns out I had, and the reviewer at After Ellen was just as confused as I was. And while the Dana-breaks-up-with-Alice scene was eventually shown, no explanation was ever provided about how Helena became part of the gang, unless it was just all that money she's been throwing around.

Carmen is gorgeous, even though I don't love her character all that much. Love Bette and felt so sad for her all season. I'm not liking Tina so much anymore, but the baby is adorable. Alice is hilarious. Jenny isn't quite so annoying, so it's a shame she has Max tagging along at all times -- which could be an interesting subplot, but it's nowhere near as compelling as it was probably meant to be. I blame bad acting and also the fact that it's kind of hard to care about a character we don't really know that well yet, especially one in such special circumstances. Dana got screwed. Shane is so cute with glasses, I wish she'd wear them all the time. Kit's new romance is all right, I suppose, but I wish he'd shave.

One thing that's been bugging me is that the show seems to be going toward a "topic of the week" kind of thing, which is why I gave up on the US version of Queer As Folk. The British one did explore some of those issues but only because one character had AIDS, for instance, or another wasn't out to his family. In the American version, it felt like each week was a Very Special Episode about gay bashing, or adoption, or ex-gay ministries. It just seemed forced and often an issue was forgotten about after an episode or two.

Bonus: two different visits to Canada (B.C., of course) during the season. You may have recognised the port in Vancouver and some of the skyline, as well as Whistler.

Other bonus: Tigh (from Battlestar Galactica) plays Dana's father. Of course, Dana's parents were featured in previous season(s?), but I hadn't seen BSG at the time.

Speaking of which, maybe someday I'll get around to writing my thoughts about that show, including my eyeroll when someone finally remembered that "Hey! Five Cylon models are still unaccounted for!"
