Due to a current dearth of teachers, my mother interviews one or two candidates a day, hoping to find one who'll fit nicely into our team. Today, just after lunch, I saw her going to her office followed by a perfectly normal-looking black man (you'll see why I'm saying this later on…)

After work, I asked her how the interview had gone and she said fine, that the man was very nice and his accent wasn't too strong. Then, trying to do an African accent, she said, "Y'est ivoiwien."

"Quoi?" I was rather confused.

"Ivoirien."

I thought for a moment, but could still only come to one conclusion. "Y’est aveugle?!"

My mother burst out laughing and had to explain that she meant "Ivoirien" (that is, from the Ivory Coast), not, as I had heard, "Y voit rien" (in my defense, they sound exactly the same!) and the tears of laughter flowed freely for the next few minutes.

So in the end, we won't be hiring a blind teacher.
