Mar. 21st, 2004 07:56 pmLast night was Onegin at the NAC and I was thoroughly swept away by the performance. The dancers were all technically wonderful, so much that after a little while of trying to deconstruct their movements (which I usually do), I gave up and just watched the show, it was that beautiful. The principal dancer was superb -- she made it look so easy I wanted to rush down and do it with her. Rex Harrington may have been shakily showing his age at the very beginning, but he really didn't do all that much dancing on his own. Onegin is a story with *characters* and his strong presence was perfect for his role as Mr. Darcy's long-lost cousin and man, is he ever an amazing partner! When doing a pas de deux, he managed to both make his presence felt and to show off the ballerina, almost fading away as he lifted her. Of course, it helped that he was dressed all in black, so all you could see was her. ^_^ The costumes and sets were impressive, the score lovely (causing me a moment of frustration when I recognised a theme and couldn't place it -- finally, I figured out it must be some music we use for développés) and the choreography very interesting. As I said, it's a character-driver story, not a showcase for virtuoso dancers, so the leads had to act, and the corps had plenty of inventive moves of their own.
In other news, I tried to cook my wok, forgetting it was in the stove when I popped my supper in to defrost. The smell of heating plastic tipped me off, though not as soon as it should have, on account of my stuffed-up nose, so I was able to rescue it. No harm done, as far as I can tell for now, just a few melted blobs of plastic that fell off the handle.
