Dec. 22nd, 2005

Today is the winter solstice, time to celebrate the returning of light. It'll be slow going, but we can get through the winter.

The idea of solstice celebration touches a chord in me; it may be the pagan blood of my Germanic, Celtic and perhaps even Nordic ancestors, or that I'm of northern climes, but knowing that the darkness of winter, if not yet the cold, will come to an end is cause for rejoicing. What better way than to bring greenery into the house and to have fire, real fire, to warm us? Even if it's only a candle flame. So I had G light a candle with me, to gently ease him into my pagan inclinations.

In sewing-related news:

- A-L's top is done and I couldn't have hoped for a better fit, despite the fact that the pattern pieces don't match up properly. Fortunately, this being my third go at it, I knew better than to blindly trust the pattern. Go me!
- Presents for sister- and brother-in-law are done but for the elastics.
- Gift bags are surprisingly easy and quick to sew, but making nearly thirty of them uses up a LOT of material. I started out with an ~5m-long sari and there's about 1m left, if that. The bags aren't even that big!

Speaking of using up material, it's so satisfying to use up a length. As I've no doubt previously written, I'm dragon-like in my love of hoarding fabric, so I'm apt to buy either more than needed for any given project or buy it without any project in mind. "This is pretty and it's on sale for 4$/m? I'll take three!" Three is the magic number, of course. One can make nearly anything with 3m of fabric, unless it's a ballgown. On top of which, I buy much faster than I can sew... *sigh*

And then, and then... There's a possibility that my green sari is waiting at the post office! I daren't get my hopes up to high, because it could be something else, but I hope hope hope it's that. Because while red is a lovely colour, I kind of really would like to be wed in green.

A-L gave me a set of photo-heavy books of fashion from the XVIIIth to XXth centuries. Beautiful! I haven't yet had a chance to look at them carefully, but it'll be a nice addition to my fashion library, which up to now consisted of *ahem* a single book, donated by my father because, "You've spent more time than all of us combined looking at it and I doubt your brothers will ever need if for reference." Score!

And in other news, I was pathetically uninclined to complete all my errands today, on account of the snow. The roads were so slippery (and we so have no winter tires) that traffic was slooooooooooow and I had to be home at a certain time in order to not go to my ballet class. The exercise would have done me good, but frankly, I didn't feel like driving up to Cantley in such conditions. So I stayed home and ate with G, after which we crashed in front of the tv for a while. Well, I crashed; I couldn't keep my eyes open at all.

Gah, it's already past midnight and I'm wide awake and in the sewing zone. Serves me right for falling asleep on the chesterfield. >_
