Evening Class by Maeve Binchy. A nice, quick read. I've only read one or two of her other books, and I can imagine that they might seem "same old, same old" after a while, but they're well-written and she manages to think up lots of interesting characters. This one follows a whole lot of different stories within a larger framework, so it was a constant game of "Oh, that's the father of the guy who works at the supermarket! And she's the friend of the teacher's daughter!" The only thing I had a little trouble believing was that it would be so easy for Lou to get out of the business of "helping" certain people. And the fact that save for one minor character, everyone is such a nice and decent person and pretty much all the youngsters are paired up by the end. Still, the perfect book to take your mind off things and as a bonus, as the story mostly takes place in Dublin (and the bits that don't are in Italy) you can try to read the dialogue with an Irish accent.
