It seems that my initial list was short a few titles, and so I believe it'll be all double (or triple!) features all the time until the end of the month, or at least until I get this beast of a project under control. Now, how about some movies?

Flashdance:

I like dance, I enjoy movies, and I try to see whatever dance movies I can, so I thought it high time I watch this *ahem* classic. As a bonus, it stars Jennifer Beals, who has been steaming up the screen on The L Word. And I must say, she makes a sexy welder, even though I cannot fathom the reason for her weird tuxedo ensemble. Also, she throws a brick through a window! Though, for a movie supposedly about dance, or at least I was always led to believe that that's what it is, it doesn't feature all that much dancing, unless you count those avant-garde stripper numbers. Really, they were treading the very fine line between "interesting concept" and "OMG-is-this-to-be-taken-seriously? hilarious", which perhaps isn't such a bad thing for a striptease.

The ending of the movie is silly, but we knew that going in, right? The idea that this girl would do an aerobics number to get into what clearly seems to be a classical dance academy strikes me as ridiculous. I understand the whole class subtext about it, i.e. she can't afford lessons and that's why she isn't performing a ballet number, but there's a time and a place for everything. Or maybe I'm just being reactionary.

When I watch movies from the '80s, I'm always surprised by how OLD they seem. And while I realise that these are movies made twenty years ago, they were still made in my lifetime, and so shouldn't seem to be from a completely different era. The thing that always strikes me the most is now restrained most of them seem, free of lingering close-ups under(over!)-scored by dramatic music, and how much more natural the lighting seems, in a lot of cases. Also, not everyone has flawless skin!

I feel like I should preface the next one by saying that the only reason I watched this was that I was weaving in ends, and so needed something I could easily tune out, and it was on a disc with a bunch of other stuff that G had downloaded last year. So it's really not my fault I watched

Bloodrayne:

-- insert my usual "I don't really get the whole vampire thing" here --

With a title like that, how could it possibly be bad? XD In many, many ways.

Ben Kingsley, what the hell were you doing in this farce? They even managed to make Kristanna Loken not hot. Which, I'm sure you'll agree, should be virtually impossible, but I really don't think red hair does anything for her. The movie is full of terrible actors, though I guess anyone given those lines and that direction would have sucked. Also, Ben Kingsley plays the stupidest vampire lord ever. Hint: when the woman claims "There is no child!" just before you kill her, how about you search the room anyway? It's not like anyone is going to stop you!

It was entertaining to observe how the costume designer took such liberties. I know the setting is "generic fantasy medieval-type world", but the costumes ranged from medieval(ish) to Elizabethan (sort of) to 18th century wigs to saloon-girl corsets to Victorian children's outfits to leather halter-tops. Sometimes all on the same person! And let's not forget the scene in which Michelle Rodrigues (whose line delivery was absolutely painful) is clearly wearing a stretchy cotton tank top.

Saying anything more would be pointless.
