It also brings home just how much knowing French increases one's English vocabulary. For instance, I'm fairly sure I've neither seen nor heard the word "surd" at any point in my life, but a moment of reflection made me choose "voiceless", because of the French "sourd" which usually means deaf, but can also mean nearly silent (un bruit sourd). Also, "serried" = "compact", I'm thinking probably from "serré"?
