Today's reviews:

Ultraviolet (tv series):

A 6-part British miniseries that's about vampires but without all the black leather*, this was enjoyable in that low-key, realistic way that British productions often are. Unfortunately, it was low-key in the sound department too, which meant I was straining to hear much of the dialogue.

The main characters are a policeman, Michael, whose best friend has recently disappeared *ahemturnedintoavampireahem*. Michael is in love with his friend's girlfriend, Francis, and he's stuck trying to keep Francis from finding out what really happened, comforting her while he really just wants to jump her. Also, Jane Bennett (Susannah Harker from the BBC's Pride & Prejudice, but she'll always be Miss Bennett to me) plays a scientist working for a mysterious government agency, led by a priest. She lost her husband and daughter years ago, and becomes convinced that her husband, who had been working on Code 5 (i.e. vampire) victims, was resurrected by the vampires and is still alive.

It was nice to see a production about vampires that didn't make them out to be seductive, debonair hotties in cool clothes. It was nice to see a production full of people who look like actual people, not like airbrushed stock photos. It was a good production, and it's a shame that there are only six episodes. Thankfully, it doesn't end with a cliffhanger, though it is open-ended.

As for the title, it refers to the fact that Code 5 infection can only be detected under ultraviolet light.

* All right, so there's some black leather, but it's not of the low-cut and skintight variety.

Final Verdict: 7.5/10 (it would be 8 but for the sound quality)

Ultraviolet (movie):

Another silly movie that I put on as background noise while I concentrated on knitting! Does it have anything at all to do with the miniseries? Hard to tell. They're both about vampires (that is, people with a blood disease that's been handily labelled vampirism) and they share the title, but that's about it. Neither Wikipedia article mentions a link, and I don't feel like digging any deeper than that.

Look, it's Milla Jovovich running around in painted-on clothes, shooting people! Need I say more? Actually, I realised halfway through that I'd already seen the movie, or at least most of it, but that was during the last few months of hell with G, when we'd just watch movies all evening long and not talk, so I must have tuned it out. I did remember Six's face, though, which is what jogged my memory. That, and I couldn't help wonder why Six seems to be THE name for artificially-created life. Any ideas?

The best I can say about this is that it's stylish-looking, for the most part; I liked Violet's changes in hair colour, and I could think of worse things for a movie to focus on than Milla Jovovich's endless legs.

Final verdict: 5/10
