Calling all people with pets!
Aug. 26th, 2008 10:22 pmBecause I'm curious. :D
You people who have (or have had) pets: what kind of pet(s) do you have? What is (are) their name(s)? Do you actually use that name to speak to them, or does your conversation devolve into "Oh yes, you're the cutest little _____ ever, aren't you?" territory? Are you embarrassed if/when this happens in front of other people, or do you not care?
As for me, my cat (the gorgeous silver tabby American shorthair of whom I've posted pictures here and here), her name is Tabitha. And I do call her that, at least when I'm speaking to her in English. I also call her "furball", "silly beast", and "evil furball" when she's clawing at the wall.
When I speak to her in French, and this is the result of not having given her a bilingual name* she becomes Croquette (my mother's fault: she said, "Elle a une face de croquette!" and it's true, so it stuck.) And even Croquette degenerates in "ma petite croquette d'amour" and "la plus belle des croquettes".
I don't care if other people hear me baby-talking to Tabitha when I take her to the vet, because I figure that no one here understands me anyway, especially when I spent the whole bus ride trying to soothe her in French. The vet and his assistant only smiled, because I imagine they see the same thing day in and day out, and they were cooing, "II ko ja ne~~~" at her as well. XD
* Of course my cat is bilingual! Actually, she's quadrilingual. Her first family was Japanese, and I'm sure G's stupid cow (and possibly G as well) spoke to her in Chinese, so there you go. Not that a cat who understands four languages is any easier to manage than one who understands but one!

Date: 2008-08-26 02:17 pm (UTC)Benji gets the most, cos he's my 'bunny' and I love him. My usual greetings to him are 'hey handsome' or 'hey monster'. He also gets called 'puppy' a lot, because of his dog-like manner. His plumpness also leads to the nickname 'fatboy', which Mum is forever trying to tell me off for. Oh, and 'monkey' is the latest one XD His diabetes has also earned him the nickname 'sugarcat'.
Tuppence gets called 'psycho-bitch' (because she is), 'wonky legs' (cos she has them), 'moaning Minnie', 'gorgeous', 'furball' and 'spaz'. Yeah, she's not the most well-tempered of animals XDD
Benj is on my lap right now XDD I don't really baby-talk my cats, opting instead to hold entire one-sided conversations with them and interpreting their responses from facial expressions XDD I do kiss and cuddle my cats a lot, which a couple of friends find odd, but I've never cared XD I'm lucky Benji is so docile, cos he puts up with me doing stuff like harassing him and nagging him!
I talk to Benj is Japanese and Tuppence in French, on occassion. I just like to use them as practice, since no one else will talk to me in either language ><;;
