Princesses all over
Sep. 3rd, 2008 08:49 pmIt hit me today that for someone who claims sewing as one of her principal hobbies, who has a whole ROOM in her apartment full of sewing stuff, I have done blessed little of it this year. BUT! I finished something!
Remember a couple of weeks ago, when I said that I had this crazy idea that I'd be able to start and finish a dress in a single morning? I did it. Two and a half hours, and I had a dress fit to go out in. Sure, the finishing job was rushed and lousy, and I had to take my scissors along with me to snip at dangling threads (and dupioni frays like a bitch, really!), and I had originally planned to have a blue band along the hem as well, but here it is:
Also, are my shoes not adorable? :D

In other sewing news, I've been elected Costume Designer for our school's Hallowe'en party, because the staff will be... the Disney princesses! XD I'm going to be Aurora (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty) in pink* rather than blue, because I have a bunch of bright pink silk that I can't imagine any other use for. We're going to have an Ariel, a Belle, a Jasmine, a Snow White, and... Pocahontas. The logical sixth would have been Cinderella, of course, but no one wanted to be her, for some reason, and the other option was Mulan. Talking it over, we were wondering if any of the kids would recognise Pocahontas, and we thought they probably wouldn't, because Pocahontas is not one of the heavily-marketed Disney movies, here.
Now I have to go rustle up some reference images to think of how I'm going to go about this. Snow White will be fairly simple, I know how to go about making Jasmine's outfit, Pocahontas won't be too tough either, and Ariel (that will be K) has already designed the costume in her mind. The most elaborate ones will be Belle, who requires an actual gown, and my own dress. Because it's mine, and if I'm to be a princess, I'm going to be as princessy as I can be! And I get to wear a tiara! :DDD
Japan, you kill me: a tv add for sanitary napkins with a bunch of ballet dancers prancing through a forest. XD
* I know that the marketing team usually has her in pink, I guess because Cinderella is already in blue, but Aurora spends most of the movie in blue, so in my mind, that's her colour. I always liked her better than Cinderella, anyway.
ETA: The shadows because of the flash make my legs look bumpy, somehow. :(

Date: 2008-09-03 11:06 pm (UTC)It's the third dress I've made using that pattern; if it ain't broke... Though this is the first one that wasn't meant to be worn over jeans or leggings.
