Some recent gems, courtesy of my students.

[Overheard during playtime, while two kids were "speaking on the phone" with each other]:

"I am in Estonia. And I am busy."

[Hyo, for those to whom I haven't shown my video of him singing "Country Road", is my pint-sized Kirihara Akaya look-alike.]

Hyo: Ms. Adele! Do you want to see my rock band?

Me: Sure! What's the name of your band?

Hyo: Gakuto! :D

Me: O___O *wondering what on earth a bendy redheaded tennis player has to do with rock music* Gakuto?

Hyo: Gakuto! :D

Me: *thinkthinkthink* You mean GACKT?!?

Hyo: Yes! :D

Hyo: Ms. Adele! Do you know Tohoshinki?

Me: Yes, why?

Hyo: I am Tohoshinki!

Me: But there's only one of you! XD

Hyo: :D

Last year, I was quite amused by this exchange -- little did I know that there would be a sequel!

A little while ago, I was joking around with Mua and Chikara, my two oldest preschool students (they're both 5). One of them said something to which I responded, "But then I'd be dead! Do you want me to die?!"

Mua: But it's all right! Because if you're bad, you go down. But if you're good, you go up.

Me: Oh, is that what happens?

Chikara: Yes. If you're bad, you go to jigoku.

Me: You mean hell?

Chikara: Yes.

Me: And what's down there?

Mua: It's dark.

Me: And if you're good?

Mua: Then you can go up! And be with Santa.

Me: XD Really?

Mua: Yes, you can help Santa make toys. And go to a yuuenchi [amusement park].

Chikara: No! If you're good, you go to tengoku. And you can look at everyone. My mummy said so.

[Bae Yong Joon is a Korean actor who is quite popular with les dames d'un certain âge (i.e. older ladies) in Japan. I guess Hyo's mother is a fan of Korean dramas, though she claims she's not a Bae Yong Joon fan, because Hyo knows who this guy is.]

Today, during playtime, Mua and Hyo asked me to play with them. They told me they were police officers, then told me to sit down, at which point they ran circles around me, shrieking with laughter and shouting, "Lock! Lock!"

Me: Oh, you're putting me in jail, is that it? Why are you arresting me? What did I do?

Hyo: You're a bad person!

Me: Am I? But you can't arrest me for just being a bad person.

Mua: You're a bad guy!

Me: But I have to have done something! What did I do to make you arrest me?

Mua: You punched somebody. A long time ago.

Me: Is that so? Who did I punch?

Hyo: You punched... *thinks very hard* Obama!

Me: *dies laughing*

Hyo: You punched Obama! And you punched Bae Yong Joon!

Me: *revives just to die of laughter all over again* XDDDDD
