I've always wanted to do an episode-by-episode recapping of So You Think You Can Dance, so here I go! I started watching the 5th American season over the break, and just finished watching the first performance show, so here are some thoughts, even though they're super late, since this is last summer's show. I think I'll write my review and my predictions (just to see how wrong I can be!) before watching the results show. That'll be interesting!
First off, can somebody PLEASE change the opening sequence? Keep the music if you must, but why are we still shown the dancers from the first season? I can't believe they can't budget a bit to film a new opening sequence with this season's dancers. Or hell, if they're worried about spoilers, use last season's! Or a mash-up of all former contestants, I don't care.
The auditions weren't too painful this time, as they didn't linger too long on some obvious losers. There was that idiot with the red dreads who "didn't care about the judges' opinions" (so why exactly are you auditioning?!) and some really painful ballroom dancing, but on the whole it was good. And the showdown between Leo and "Sex" was actually pretty amusing, not the cringe-fest I was expecting.
Best moment, hands down, was Cat Deely saying, with a gleeful little grin, "I love it when grown men cry!" If I weren't already in love with her, that would have sealed the deal. <3
Worst moment, was why the hell did they bring back that twit Lauren from season 3 to do choreography? Gah, she was irritating enough as a contestant, did anyone like her?!
And now, the top twenty!
Best moment: Mary saying she can't raise an eyebrow because of Botox. I, along with everyone else -- including Mary herself -- died laughing at this.
Overall, I must say that from what I've seen, I like all the dancers chosen for the top twenty. A few haven't been shown much, so I'm guessing the producers are expecting them to stick around long enough for us to get to know them, since they were preoccupied with the sibling drama provided by Caitlin and her sister, and Evan and his brother. Anyway, at the moment I feel about this bunch the way I felt about the top twenty of the first Canadian season, so I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season!
Ah, yes, and the dancing, of course!
Jeanine & Phillip (hip hop): I loved the routine, the movements were so fluid and bouncy, yet sharp. Phillip doesn't have an attractive face, but he moves so well that he looks gorgeous while he dances. Jeanine was also quite good in this, though she hasn't really stood out to me yet -- or rather, the editing hasn't featured her much yet.
Asuka & Vitolio (Broadway): I remembered Asuka autioning for season 4, and was confused at first because with Cat's accent, it sounded like she was saying "Oscar". Anyway, Asuka is adorably hot, if that makes sense, and there's something about Vitolio that I find really appealing. The number was of fun, but I agree with the judges that the performance was a bit lacking. Great costumes and make-up, though!
Karla & Jonathan (cha-cha): I love the song "Poker Face", so I'm biased, but this was awesome. Hot and sexy and fun! Jonathan's got a pretty-boy face, but he managed to dance past that and match Karla's playful sexiness. I also love the fact that Jonathan took up dance because he saw the first season of the show -- he's way better than many of those top 10 guys!
Randi & Evan (jazz): Randi who? Another one the editors haven't spent much time on. As the judges pointed out, both of these dancers are really short (especially standing next to Cat!), but you never would have guessed that from the way they danced. Beautiful love story.
Paris & Tony (hip hop): I'm going to be mean and call Paris "Chin" from now on, because that's all I can see of her face. XD But she's good! I thought her outfit was hot. The choreography itself was nice and smooth (Tabitha and Napoleon do some very, very good work) but overall it wasn't really memorable. Good, but not super excellent as other numbers were.
Caitlin & Jason (Bollywood): First of all, I feel all warm and fuzzy when I think of the fact that back in season one, every second dance was hip hop or music-video-jazz, because the producers thought that's all the audience would be willing to watch. And now, we have Bollywood! It's a style I know practically nothing about, though I really enjoy watching it, and I kind of get the feeling that the judges over-praised a little, maybe because it's a style they don't know much themselves. While overall it was good, I thought the arms should have been a bit sharper at times. Maybe it was meant to be that way, but it seemed strange to have some soft arms while the footwork was so fast and precise; it's almost as it the hands were lagging behind.
Janette & Brandon (foxtrot): Elegance! Grace! Loved it. I must say, if Brandon needs to make extra cash, he should model for art classes. Does he have a single muscle that isn't superbly defined? I think not. Liked Adam's joke about this being the first time Brandon danced with clothes on. XD Watching that kind of dancing is almost painful, just because it makes you want to be in their shoes so badly. I want a dress like Janette's! Maybe not quite that shade of pink, though. ^_^;
I don't quite get why Mia has such a hate-on for Brandon. I can understand if he hasn't lived up to the hype for her, but apart from that...? It may be a bit like with Danny from the third season. I watched that season with my aunt, and she couldn't stand Danny; she thought he was an arrogant, self-absorbed jerk, while I didn't get that vibe from him at all. To me, he just seemed reserved, unlike all the other effusive contestants who jump around at the slightest bit of praise, and if I could dance half as well as he can, I'd be pretty pleased with myself too, but I didn't find him arrogant. /aside
Ashley & Kupono (jazz): When Wade Robson choreographs, you know it's going to be amazing, and seriously? Crash test dummies? With music by Goldfrapp? Absolute genius, and I don't even know what to say about this, it was so cool, and perfectly danced. Jazz blades, indeed! But, as Mary pointed out, the little dog stole the show! XDDD
Melissa & Ade (jazz): A dance to Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" could have been incredibly cheesy, but this worked. It was sweet and lovely and they both looked so happy and in love. *longing sigh*
Kayla & Max (samba): Sexy and hot! Which is what samba should be, am I right? Max fills in the role of the obligatory Russian ballroom dancer (it's illegal to have a season without one), so of course he's tall and masculine, and though not as handsome as Dmitri or Pasha, he's got the moves. I kind of wanted to dislike Kayla on principle, since she's young and bubbly and cute and blonde, but I was suckered into liking her because her grandfather is so adorable. Okay, and she's quite charming herself, from what I've seen.
My predictions: Bottom three couples will be Melissa & Ade, Paris & Tony, and hmm... Asuka & Vitolio, possibly.
And now, I will watch the results show!
Haha, this is like live blogging, except it's not live!
Why the helld had I forgotten about Shane Sparks? That opening number was great.
So I was wrong about Melissa & Ade, it was Karla & Jonathan. Though I was predicting who I thought would be voted the least for, not who I thought deserved to come in last.
Ooh, tango! I love how instead of getting lame singing acts they have actual dancers in a dance show. Man, was that ever hot.
Okay, never mind, there's a singing act. At least it's a fun song.
Based on the solos and everything else, I think that Tony and Paris should go home. They're good, but not as good or as interesting as the others, I think.
And the judges are back... Goodbye, Paris and Tony! Good call on my part.
Bah, I don't want to go back to work tomorrow. How is it possible that out of 14 days, I only spent 2 of them at home on my own? So much for days of rest. @_@
