Another Exciting Saturday Night
Nov. 13th, 2010 10:02 pmKimberly and I had lunch at Outback -- in spite of the fact that it was past 2:00, and we hadn't eaten since before 10:00, we only managed to eat one little loaf of bread, barely half a blooming onion, one cup of soup (me), one garden salad (her), and we didn't even finish the 300g steak with vegetables and fries. In our respective countries, that would be a portion for a single person (well, not the onion, but all the rest), and the two of us weren't even able to eat that much!
My tummy was very round all through ballet rehearsal and then a class. And even after over three hours of dancing, I wasn't the least bit hungry. I picked up a few things in Kichijouji, walked home, and since 8:30 I've been puttering around. I have my supper laid out in front of me, but so far, I've just been sipping at my wine. It's good wine, though.
Supper: prosciutto, tiny yellow tomatoes, gruyère (I caved and bought a small block of it for Y1,000 the other day), soda crackers, and the aforementioned wine. Once I get the rest of this post done, I'm going to put on a movie, eat, and knit.
The original version had a duplicate question for this day, so this is my own: Day 13 - How is daily life in Japan different from how it was back in your home country?
I have no bed, no sofa, no kitchen table. I sleep on the floor. I have to switch on the water heater before showering. I walk or bike to work most days. I take the train to get places. I know that if I time it right, I can get discounted prepared meals at the department store or the supermarket. In the summer, the air never cools down, even at night, so I never need to plan ahead and bring something to cover up with if I'm going to be getting home after dark. In winter, I pile on way more blankets than I ever used back home, because I don't have heating here and the walls aren't insulated. I can get sushi for cheap, but cheese is expensive. I own a pair of rubber boots, which are the single best footwear investment I've ever made. Every day, a chime alerts the neighbourhood to the fact that it's five o'clock. I pay my bills at the convenience store. Bank ATMs are not open 24 hours. I separate my garbage according to type, and put it out three or four days a week.

Day 13 – This week
As it's Saturday evening, I can't decide whether that should mean this week, as in the week that's ending, or as in the one that's beginning. What the hell, I'll do both!
This past week: I had ballet rehearsal, I worked, I felt pretty awful for two days, though I'm feeling loads better now. The jury's still out on what the hell was wrong with me, though I got some thinking done and have a theory or two. Will have to ruminate some more on that. I've been keeping up with my writing, and I watched a couple of movies while knitting.
This coming week: There will be more ballet rehearsals (at least 3?), work as usual, and I should be seeing the new Harry Potter movie on Friday. I'm going to keep at the writing, and I hope there will be more knitting progress. If I find a moment or two, there's sewing I'd like to do as well. And sleep, sleep would be good.
