Speaking of nostalgia...

You know what the smell of school is? It's the smell of new plastic, that kind of sticky squelching sound new binders make.

I had that flash of insight yesterday at work, of all places, while filing papers in plastic folders that smelled of going back to school.

My new job has, so far, consisted quite a bit of me going around begging people for any little task they can think of for me to do. Typing, filing, photocopying... The usual gopher tasks, what.

A little note on the intellectual level of at least one of the people I work with. Yesterday at lunch, a woman was saying how she'd rented "that new Julia Roberts movie" (America's Sweethearts) over the weekend. Her comments? "It was good, but the ending wasn't even a surprise. It was obvious she'd end up with the guy!"

I felt like banging my head on the table.

I know, I know. Although it did raise the question of whether or not there are actually people who expect to be surprised by the ending of a Julia Roberts romantic comedy ("My Best Friend's Wedding" did go against the grain, admittedly).
