Nov. 7th, 2006

Moving slowly forward in my quilting adventures, I idly started a tally the other day and found that of the 16-odd fabrics I've been piecing with so so far, I've used the scraps from 4 different pairs of pyjama pants, 4 tops, 4 dresses, 1 skirt* and 1 pair of curtains. Of those things, only 1 top, 2 dresses and the skirt I made for myself; the rest were all gifts for friends and family, made within the past the past 2 years. It's nice to know I've been so productive! I tend to forget that, sometimes, since my sewing efforts are often concentrated in short, intense burst, usually around Halloween, Christmas and dance recital time and they normally involve lots of things made for others.

The wind is incredibly strong today, I'm afraid it might even blow over some of the potted plants on the terrace. And they're big ones, too!

* Technically I made 2 skirts, but since one was made out of remnants from the fabric used for a couple of the tops, I'm not going to count it, seeing as I didn't buy the fabric specifically for that purpose.
How nice it would be if my urges to clean up my sewing room and get things organised didn't conflict with my desire to do something, in this case the quilt. My thought of "I'll just look for [totally unrelated to sewing item] in the laundry closet" wound up in me finding more blue fabric that I didn't even remember I had, which in turn made me think that emptying my stash closet and sorting things might turn up everything I need for the quilt, thus eliminating the need to buy anything except batting for it, which was the whole point of the quilt to begin with. But then I thought that I might as well try to complete the inventory of my stash, which needs updating completing. The easiest thing to do would most likely be to completely empty the closet and not put anything back in unless it's entered in the notebook, but that would mean either a) doing nothing but that until it's done (no mean feat!) or b) total chaos in here as I attempt to do it little by little, while still working on Other Things.

Bloh.

Oh, what the hell, stash inventory it is.
Now that the closet is looking a little barer, or at least the corner by the closet is, and my sewing table is piled high with fabric, I feel so much better! Nothing like moving things to make oneself feel productive. My estimate is that for the stuff on my sewing table, the ration of inventoried to non-inventoried is somewhere in the vicinity of 3.5:5. I'm not sure about the stuff in the closet but it's probably more like 1:2. Urg. I won't do anything about it tonight, though, too tired.

On the bright side, moving stuff has yielded more blue scraps, some in a fabric I'd completely forgotten I had scraps of! So to add to my list of provenance, 1 bag (made for someone else) as well as a skirt my mother made for me when I was ten years old and in grade six.

*yawn*

That last one was really à décrocher la machoire, as we say!
